It is estimated that over one million tonnes of textiles, which is made up of clothing and shoes, is discarded in the UK each year with the majority of waste coming from homes. Recycling textiles is very important for the environment; the average household bin contains 3% - 5% textile waste – half of which is recyclable. Only 25% of this is actually recycled, meaning the rest is simply disposed of, usually in landfill sites.

Wasting textiles this way poses many problems for the environment as man-made textiles, such as nylon and polyester, won’t decompose but will produce methane gases which effects global warming.

It also means clothing and shoes, which can be of good quality, are not offered to disadvantaged people around the world.
